Well, I must have blinked because, on Saturday, this little ragamuffin of ours turned two:
My favorite thing about Henry is that he is the most mischievous little guy who has ever walked the earth. I am sure that most moms of two year old boys have said the same thing but, really, Sir William Huckstable the First takes the cake. When I was pregnant with Henry, I remember laying on the bed one morning as Andrew was getting ready for work and, running my hand over my (mid-sized) belly, I said to Andrew, “I feel like he is going to be a quiet one.” because, for some reason, he just felt like it. A few months later, though, I woke up in the middle of the night to the fifteenth dance party he had held in my (enormous) belly in less than three hours and, grunting and using Andrew as a level to pull myself into a sitting position, I looked pack at him and said, “We’re getting a wild one!” and felt super excited and then mildly apprehensive because, if you’ve ever met my firstborn, he is basically made of sunshine and rainbows and smiles and lollipops (the kid loves sugar) but also has a stubborn streak the length of the Mississippi and I had not clue how I would be able to parent both.
And it turns out? I was right on both counts! We got a quiet, wild, mischievous little blondie and he is one of the very most wonderful things that has ever happened to me in my entire life. Henry has a heart of gold and an eye full of mischief (I mentioned he was mishevious, right?) and there is nothing better than watching him sing songs for forty-five minutes or seeing him fly around like a superhero while saying “Zoom!!” (because, obviously) and nothing better than seeing him walk out of the kitchen cupboard carrying a gallon sized box of Goldfish with a look on his face saying that he won’t be caught, like, ever. I mean, when he couldn’t eat wheat, I used to find him wholed up underneath his window or hiding in the bathroom with a container of Ritz crackers that I didn’t even know we had and, too many times to count he’s said “Okay!” with the biggest smile on earth when I tell him “No” and, as he’s saying “Okay!”, he’s also doing whatever it is he’s not allowed to do… which would explain why he’s gotten so good at sneaking.
My boy. He is a fun one and I am so happy he is ours – like, so happy that I grinned a splitting grin the entire time I wrote this post. Because being a mom? It is the best – and I say that as someone who watched her son enter the terrible two’s while eating at Smitty’s Garage this past Tuesday night. Homeboy was crazy.
And because I’m a proud mom and love my baby’s baby photographs, here’s one taken one day after he was born. If you don’t want baby fever, don’t look! Because if you look at this photograph? You’ll get it!
