Springtime and the Living is Easy (But Also Crazy)

The past few weeks have been CRAZY, so here’s a photo of Henry eating In & Out back in January.

So! My “off season” (I put “off season” in quotes because, this year, my off season was super on – and awesome!) went like this: we traveled, we ate, every single member of my family binge watched at least one entire TV show (Jane the Virgin for me; Octonauts for Henry; Stampy Videos for Max; The Great British Baking Show for Andrew… also Mafia movies for me), and I half painted, like, five rooms in our house. And while “half painting” may seem more like a mom fail than a mom success, I’m calling it a huge success because the rooms in our house are shaping up to be CUTE. I mean, what else could a mom with two super happy – and busy! – boys ask for?

In March, we went to Kansas City for a long weekend. The super old looking 17 year old on the left in the next set of photographs is my brother Noah. Noah is a junior in high school and his muscles kind of make me want to barf because I was twelve when he was born and I used to carry him on my hip everywhere and, all of the sudden, he’s, like, barely a year away from high school graduation. How does that even happen?! He got his wisdom teeth pulled out recently (a day or two before this photograph of him was taken) and he honestly walked around with Victoria and ZuZu (my mom’s dog) like this half the time we were there. He’s a dog whisperer. Also, sometimes when I look in the mirror with no makeup I totally see his face in mine and it freaks me out. Ha!

Speaking of kids growing up in the blink of an eye, Max is growing like a weed! He turns a whopping six years old this summer and starts kindergarten a few weeks later in the fall. Max’s birthday is, like, right before the Arkansas cut off for kindergarten and after, like, five million conversations over whether to let him go young or wait a bit, we opted to hold him back. This was 100% the best decision for both Max and our family but, sometimes, when we’re out and about, people will ask Max if he is in kindergarten and he always smiles and says, “I could be in kindergarten but my mom held me back!” and then I totally have to stifle laughter because it sounds so dramatic and matter of fact and potentially awkward at the same time. Max is awesome.

Ooooh. Here’s a good one! Two weeks ago, I wrapped a senior session and, while walking backwards, reviewing my camera, and probably telling a really bad joke, I tripped into an enormous hole in the ground and totally rolled my ankle. This is not a new injury for me – I tore all the ligaments in my foot back in 2007 and then in 2010 – but it was the loudest fall ever. My ankle must have cracked, like, eleven times and it was super embarrassing and super funny and also a smidge scary. I always knew that I’d fall one day at a session but I always thought it would be from climbing rocks or wading in a body of water. I can mostly walk now but I couldn’t walk at all for the first four days afterwards so Henry and I basically just watched TV and snuggled for a week. #noregrets

And yesterday! Yesterday was a good one. In the morning, I booked the cutest couple for their December 17th wedding – they are awesome! – and, afterwards, I went out to lunch and the Pie Palooza at Fork & Crust with a couple of friends. My bestie Lauren is super pregnant and she was ridiculously excited for all of the pie, as you can see by her face below. Also, I think we’ve already talked about pie, like, five times since yesterday afternoon. If you go there, get a slice of lemon – or lemon blueberry. It is the BEST and I’m obsessed.

Annnnnnd let’s end this post with this photograph of Victoria. The Queen got her first haircut on Friday and she came home looking like a little old lady. Andrew loves her haircut, Henry is impartial, and Max and I are both real excited for her to gain some of her fluff back. This little pup is so spoiled, she doesn’t even eat dog food anymore – she eats salmon instead.
