The Cutest Art Museum in Memphis | Plus The Peabody Hotel and the Lorraine Motel, Too!

I have, like, a billion travel posts that I need to blog.

Andrew and I have been really lucky this year when it comes to travel. When we first got married, I wasn’t really into the idea of traveling. I liked it but I’m also a total homebody and really love to be at home but, the longer we’ve been married, the more I love traveling and, today, I can tell you that I LOVE it (capital letters included!). I love traveling new places – particularly when I’m with Andrew – and have had so much fun this year traveling throughout the country. Also, I have to give mad props to my kids. A few weeks ago, at ages 2 1/2 and 5, they flew to Idaho with their Mimi (Andrew’s mom!) and are so used to airplanes that they both hugged me five times, squealed with excitement, and then said “Bye Mom!”, their little hands waving and little faces beaming as they made their way through security when we dropped them off. I bawled like a baby, of course, but those two absolutely love flying and traveling and it was so fun to see. I didn’t even know that kids could love traveling so young!

But! I digress!

The past few months, we have been to San Francisco, Memphis, Mississippi, Kansas City, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. And this post? It’s about our short stay in Memphis! I’d somehow never been to Memphis before but, when we photographed Beth and Ethan’s wedding in Mississippi, we decided to make a stop and stay at the Peabody Hotel in Downtown Memphis for a night and, you guys, it was so much fun. The room was gorgeous!!

Aside from staying at The Peabody, the only thing we had planned for Memphis was to go to the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. I have always wanted to go to the Lorraine Motel since I saw a photograph of it in my third grade textbook – who doesn’t want to learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr.?! – and, once I found out that it had been turned into a full-on museum, I couldn’t wait to finally go and see everything for myself. The museum was amazing. I think I’ve written about my love for museums on here before – I love them so much that I even volunteered as a museum docent for a few weeks in college – and they are always a must-do for me anywhere we go. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the museum when we first went but it was absolutely beautiful, totally thought provoking, and definitely something everyone should go to if they ever have the chance. I loved it and raved about the museum for weeks after we set foot inside (and still rave about it whenever it comes up, obviously). If you ever go to Memphis, you need to go here! I didn’t take any photographs inside the museum but here’s some of the motel!

And last but not least! After we checked into our hotel, Andrew and I spent the afternoon wandering and, among other gems, we found the most eclectic collection of art ever at the Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art and I took so many photographs it was ridiculous. I LOVE art so much and I loved how this museum celebrated so much in such a small space. This was the cutest art museum ever and I am so happy we stumbled upon it! Also, this isn’t photographed but the museum also included one of the most touching Holocaust exhibits that I have ever seen – it was just a small room, really – and I just was so touched by it. Again, if you are ever in Memphis, go here! It is beautiful!!

Annnnnd to end this post, here’s a random photograph of a doughnut. We ate doughnuts every single day of our three day trip – the first doughnuts either of us have had in two and a half years. This trip was back in May and, since then, I’m always eating doughnuts when we’re away from Henry (our egg allergy baby). I didn’t even like them that much before he was born but, now, I’m totally obseesed. Doughnuts are amazing and I’m crossing my fingers and toes that he tests out of his egg allergy by age seven or eight so that we can start eating doughnuts out in the open once again because there is no way I am making these with egg replacer. Ha!
